Guinness World Records maintains this as 'earliest true shark fossils', separate from its 'earliest fossil evidence' record — that the two records exist separately is itself the evidence that the two claims are not the same.

Wattieza and then Archaeopteris — the first plants with trunks and true forests. Land plants long predate them; mosses and liverworts were there before sharks.

There are older scales, from 450 million years back, but paleontologists still argue about whether those are true sharks.
Late Ordovician scales. Whether they belong to true sharks or to very close relatives is unresolved.
We used 420, the undisputed figure. Using 450 would make the gap sound bigger and would be adopting a live dispute as settled.
